Link #168 - Holy Wednesday
Read John 11:1-44
“Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.” (John 11:5)
In John 11 we read about an incredible event where Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead. He actually calls out to Lazarus to come out of his tomb. At the back of the chapel at Bloor Central we have a painting that visualizes that moment. It is obvious that Jesus had a special relationship with Lazarus and his two sisters. In John 11:5 we are bluntly told of the love Jesus had for them.
The scriptures do not make any mention of what Jesus did on the Wednesday of Holy Week. It is speculated that after a few very busy days Jesus rested, probably in Bethany where he had been staying. Bethany was about 2 miles from Jerusalem and it was common for travelers to find accommodation there when visiting Jerusalem. It was also the home of Lazarus, Mary and Martha. I have often considered Jesus on this Wednesday staying in Bethany and spending time with friends. Jesus was preparing to offer the perfect sacrifice on Good Friday for the entire human race and that included Lazar us and his sisters. This day I’m reminded of the friendship Jesus offers us. His sacrifice was for all of humanity, but in all of that he offers us a very personal frienship.
“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” John 15:13
